R.I.P. Sugar Minott

On Sat. July 10, 2010 the godfather and one of the inventors of dancehall music, Lincoln “Sugar” Minott, died in the university hospital of Kingston at the age of 54.
Born in 1956 in Kingston, he started his career unlike most of his colleagues, who were singing in Church, in the dancehall in the beginning of the 1970s. ” I was born in a dancehall, I am a real Raggamuffin!” was a common phrase one could hear while talking to him. 1978 he recorded his debut “Live Loving” at legendary “Studio One”. Minott not only was known for the style that he invented, but also was responsible for many carriers of fellow Artists. With his labels “Youth Promotion” and “Black Roots” he consistently signed new young artists like Junior Reed, Yami Bolo, Garnett Silk or Johnny Osbourne. A big force of Reggae music has passed, but did not miss to plant a many new seeds. His works will live on for Iver.
Rest in perfect peace, Sugar.
